7 min from High CampThe river runs right through Portola and offers good trout fishing in a scenic, accessible setting. Wade fishing along several easy access points. Rainbow and brown trout.
Frenchman Lake
30 min from High CampA popular reservoir with rainbow trout, brown trout, and smallmouth bass. Bank fishing and boat access available. The lake is surrounded by sagebrush and pine, with mountain views in every direction.
Lake Davis
25 min from High CampOne of the best trout lakes in the region. Known for quality rainbow trout fishing from shore or boat. The lake also offers good camping and picnic areas if you want to make a full day of it.
Gold Lake
40 min from High CampA stunning alpine lake in the Lakes Basin area near Graeagle. Trout fishing in a beautiful high-elevation setting. The drive alone is worth it, passing through some of the best scenery in the Lost Sierra.
Graeagle Mill Pond
25 min from High CampA calm, family-friendly spot for fishing, swimming, and paddling. Stocked with trout during the season. Great option for families with younger kids who want to wet a line.
What to Know
- License: A valid California fishing license is required for anyone 16 and older. You can purchase one online or at sporting goods stores in the area.
- Season: General trout season runs from late April through mid-November. Some waters have special regulations, so check current rules for your specific destination.
- Gear: Bring your own gear. There are no tackle shops in Portola, but Reno and Truckee have full sporting goods stores.
- Best times: Early morning and late evening produce the best results, especially in summer when midday temperatures warm the water.
- Species: Rainbow trout and brown trout are the most common catches. Some lakes also have bass and other species.
