High Camp is located near Portola, CA in the Lost Sierra region of Plumas County. Most guests drive in from Reno, Sacramento, or the Tahoe area.

The Forest Road to High Camp

The last mile to High Camp is a dirt forest road that turns off a paved county road just outside Portola. Most vehicles handle it fine, including standard SUVs, trucks, and all-wheel-drive cars.

Low-clearance vehicles (sports cars, sedans riding low) may scrape in a few spots. If you're unsure about your vehicle, reach out and we'll help you figure it out.

Road Tips

  • Drive slowly and watch for washboard sections
  • The road is about 1 mile from the paved county road to camp
  • Allow an extra 5 minutes for the dirt road portion
  • We'll send detailed turn-by-turn directions before your arrival
